Friday morning 9.30.

Silly studio photo session with Mika and Erol at uni.

A 120 roll of black and white 400ASA Ilford Delta didnt come out at all... in fact even the developer was GREEN when I poured it out, never happened before. Ive never seen green X-TOL coming out of a tank in my life.

It might have been the x-rays at airports that fucked up the film, but im not sure if that would really affect the color of the used developer... go figure.

Who ever fancies knowing about the lights set-up, there was a redhead positioned some 3 meters away front left, main light soft box back left at f7, a head light black right top at f5 and a another big soft box front right at f5 or f7... all at the same range approx. I changed the ratios of the lights as we went so Im not that sure what setting those 3 frames had.

Ive been driving lorry trucks all summer again.

I got lucky too, though.

I got an assignment from Jonathan Ben-Ami !

He was hired by a big-ass mobile phone & services company from up north to make a promotional video for their new mobile service thingie or something like that. not really my business really... but he called me asking if I would be available to shoot it. Would I? Hell yes I would.

Anyway, were starting tomorrow. Everything - or at least most - should be prepared now: actors, locations, camera etc... just need to go and see if we want to use any lighting equipment. Probably yes. At least Id love to.

We drove nearly 200 kilometers to another town just to get a Canon XM2 videocamcorder. It was not the actual camera we wanted but what comes with it: a Redrock Micro lens adapter for Canon EF lenses. Camcorders cant usually take advantage of shallow DoF's due to their tiny CCD sensors. With the adapter you can project the image onto a constantly rotating matt glass inside the adapter, which the camcorder then records. Smart.

The camera looks _massive_ with an EF 70-200 4L lens attached. You can see the adapter there right between the lens and the camcorder.

Theres some still images I made for the project to give some idea of what the clips are going to look like, you can see some of them here.

And yes, it will be B&W.

And yes, it will be extremely hard to keep subjects in focus with lens aperture of 1.4, especially when its not still images and the picture in the view finder & eye piece is upside down and reversed...

Ill do just fine, though :)

Hello there. No posts after Romania... dunno why really.. guess I just forgot I even had a blog.

Anyway. What all I've been up to lately? nowt. apart from work. I havent really even had time to take any photos or anything. I took a few rolls of film to a local shop though, but they seriously fcuked them up. I mean, I think the films are just fine but the prints I ordered are wack: the colors are not even close to what they should be, if you take the film and compare it to the print you can see a vast difference. Its funny how, though, the tinted color varies, some of them are yellow-ish and some green. It makes no sense at all to me.

For that money, Ill never order prints again. Just developement. Maybe neg scans?

Ive been going out a lot lately though... even on a monday. Took some photos:

A nice bar that Redrum. Pretty small though... but I suppose it only boosts the atmosphere. They should take up the age limit by a couple of years, theres the magical line where people stop sticking empty pints and glasses all over the floor when they turn 20 or more.

Hello all.

I promised to update this blog and upload some pictures, but Ive been busy doing other stuff and trying to keep my stomach in shape in this heat and different type of food...

I have something like 500 photos in digital form and a roll of color film, ill put them up as soon as I can. Theres a slight problem with electricity and internet connections... and time.

My time's running out.

This photography project for the genres of photogaphy module is due next wednesday - well, at least thats when the crit is - and I've done literally fuck all.

I've had a month to go out and take photos, but I only shot the first rolls of film yesterday.

Im supposed to imitate - maybe not imitate but be consciously influenced by another photographers work...

This man on the metro was playing with his Nintendo DS... the woman behind him kept staring at me as if it was illegal to take a photograph in the metro.

... in this case Tony Ray-Jones who was an english-born documentary photographer whose work despite his very early death of laukaemia in 1972 has been credited as one of the most talented in the world of photography.

People reading news papers are interesting. I think this was at Pelaw metro station. Lots of chavs there.

This is South Shields. I dont think Ive seen any other places with that many people jogging around. Understandable though - I think its also the very best place for jogging anyway with the coast right next to you.

I think there is something in common with his and my work, I dont mean the conceptual side but the compositions and subjects we both favor. Style?

Also people sleeping in public places such as the metro here are interesting. This is one of the photos shot from hip height, I didnt really want to advertise myself taking photographs.

If I remember right someone at university told me the first two years of studying would be more or less concentrated on growing each student into their own style of photography. As I think, the only way to build up your own t"style" is trough experience and Im confident most other people would agree on that. Sometimes though, I feel like the course is not too competent in that sense: seeing theres people like myself who have been walking with a camera in their hand for nearly a decade and then people who can hardly tell how a camera works - not that there is anything wrong with that itself, but Im not sure if the programme has been designed for totally inexperienced people or those a bit more advanced.

South Shields metro station. This seagull was absolutely massive. Gigantic. Not as big as those in Helsinki Kauppatori that tend to snatch peoples hotdogs from their hands while being mid-air.

Point Im trying to make: There should be more freedom of choice about your coursework, not just the way it is now where you basically get told what to do for each module and whose work you are to copy. I think I have found my "style". Said before: it comes out of experience and staring at tens of thousands of pictures, not reading books. I understand researching literature is important in order to produce any work, also photography, with a concept. Then again, how important is the concept of your work? If you like taking photographs of squirrels or ducks like them with their big-ass telephoto zoom lenses, is it essential to have a concept? After all, photography can and usually is described as art, and I think any work, be it a painting or a photograph that is enjoyable to look at is art.

Bla.Ill just stop crying about stuff now. You could say Im frustrated?

Brits are nuts about football. Even though I knew this before coming to England, it never stops amazing me. They put flags and other stuff everywhere.

I've decided to put off the LCD screen of my 350D. I mean, disable the automatic displaying of taken photos.

Reasons behind the decision vary: Im getting ill of hundreds of photographs to go to through every time Ive been shooting digitally. Theyre also a pain in my ass to store. I as well want to try and increase the quality of my digital work, put some more time and effort into it and think about the frames Im taking, not just put my camera on Av and then go point-and-shoot at things chimping the photographs from the monitor and make on-location judgements over the images supported by a shitty tiny LCD screen.

I realized all this finally after reading another photo student deciding to do the same basicly for the same reasons.

The Dead Rabbits were a gang in New York City in the 1850's originally part of the Roach Guards. Pennywell is one of the UK's largest post-war social housing developments, and is situated in the west of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, North East England.

Pennywell is one of the least privileged areas of the city. The Sunderland Housing Group, in an attempt to redevelop the area, moved residents who have had complaints filed against them into the surrounding estates.

An industrial area on the western edge of the suburb has, among other businesses Magna Kansei's main plant and the Sunderland Echo building.

The area is marked by burned and abandoned houses and garbage, and everything thats still left standing is going to be demolished.

It's a very rough place.

Standing in the middle of all the buildings makes you think about Kosovo.

Everyone seems to be wearing trainers.

The first time we went to Pennywell to check out the area for Chris's university project we met an old man who pretty explained in detail what was really going on there.

The building company who originally erected the buildings now wants to buy them back and demolish them in order to rebuild the area. From what I understood this older man saying back then it seems the people living there arent too happy about it. They must have been cheated somehow, maybe they aren't being offered proper prices for their property or something.

This is a Fuji 6x7 medium format rangefinder camera Chris is using for his project.

I've never held a rangerfinder in my hands before getting in touch with one these, and it surely feels good. After a carrying one of those around for a day I could tell lots of differences between it and the SLR's I've been using previously. Firstly, the focusing was weird in the beginning, but when you get the idea it's not that much of a problem. The film winder is stupid, you have to wind it twice to get to the next frame... it's a bit slow. At first the camera felt really heavy, too, though not as heavy as my EOS-1 with the powerwinder attached. The problem with it is that most of the cameras weight is somehow on the left side of the body making pretty irritating to carry in just your right hand. Unlike with the EOS-1, you can't really use your focusing left hand to support the right hand holding the camera in balance. The body also as a weird plastic feel into it... if you tap with the tip of your finger the sound matches one of those plastic eggs inside a Kinder egg. So random, I know.

Anyway, it's a nice piece of a camera.

Same camera from the left side. I like how the exposure controls are easily accessible: I believe after getting experienced enough you don't need to see the f stop and exposure time scales at all, you can tell the settings from the positions of the two dials.

Late Night Sessions in the White Room last friday!

Music was excellent, I got into good mood instantly when I came upstairs and heard Massive Attack - Teardrop being played before their gig!

The little crackers with olives and stuff on top of them were fantastic, too.

I like food.

The mantle was not easy to dust. It was, in fact, completely covered in photographs. There had to be fifty or more there. Yet, the time it took to remove each picture and then to put it back in just the right spot was her favorite chore. For some people, photographs are just a mandatory thing to be taken at birthdays, award ceremonies, proms, and graduations - but not for her. For her they were a record of a lifetime, the only thing she could use to remember the past. You see, along with age came the tendency to forget, and not just forgetting the little things. Sure, it started out that way. First, forgetting that she had already put the towels in the dryer. Next, forgetting that she had an appointment that day. Then, forgetting where she last put those glasses. But finally, the things had become far more precious: where she went on vacation with her parents in the fourth grade, her best friend's name in high school, her son's birthday, even what the man whom she had spent forty years of her life with had really looked like. The greatest tragedy in life is when one forgets what that life was once made of. And so this dusting of the mantle became more than just everyday cleaning, it became a way to hold on to her past.
She moved slowly towards the old mantle, a can of Pledge in one hand and an old rag in the other. Old age had slowed her movements some. She would admit that to anyone who asked, but she still kept the best house in town. It seemed that every day some part of it needed cleaning, and when the whole house had been dusted, vacuumed, mopped, scrubbed, waxed, and polished until it could take no more cleaning, it was time to start back at the beginning. She didn't mind. There wasn't much more to do around her home now that Jim had died. He had been a good man. She had been married to him for forty years. All those years of eggs and bacon for breakfast had finally caught up with him.

One by one she would lift the photos off of the mantle. The first was a picture of Johnny Mitchell, her high school sweetheart. Jim had often kidded her for keeping this picture. They had dated for two years and had planned to marry, or so they said. But he went away to college and she stayed at home and attended nursing school. They had tried to keep in touch, but time and distance changed them, and both soon found others to laugh and to cry with and eventually marry. Not that she regretted it at all. Her years with Jim had been as wonderful as she could have hoped. But still, sometimes she wondered, what if ?

Next, was a picture of her oldest, Jim Jr. He was a good kid and she and Jim had been very proud of him. He was wearing his uniform, Marine uniform that is. He had joined straight out of high school. He had wanted to serve his country. He had wanted to be a hero. He was a hero, even the preacher had said so at his funeral.

Then came another photo and another memory. This one of Jim and two friends he had from the coal mines. They were all smiles, their white teeth showing very well against their dark, black faces. Jim had gotten sick the day after the photo was taken. He hadn?t gone to work that day. His two friends had, and they were both killed when the shaft they were in, the same one Jim also would have undoubtedly been in, had collapsed and trapped fifteen miners inside.

Then there was a picture of her two other sons: twins. Both had graduated at the top of their class. One had been a doctor and the other a lawyer. The first was far too busy with his medical practice to visit on anything other than a holiday. The second came over more often, but not nearly enough. She had a thousand memories, a thousand moments, frozen in time in these photographs.

Finally, pictures of friends long dead, family far away, and moments even farther. Sometimes these moments came back to her. Each and every one equal an entire lifetime. The sum of all of her experiences were here on her mantle. But it was a picture not on, but above her mantle that interested her the most. It was an old photograph, taken long before she was born. It was old and yellowed with age, but still all the details could be made out with ease. It was a family photograph, taken on the front porch of an old wooden house. Two men with shotguns stood on the edges. The other men lined up in the back, the women in the middle, and the child in front. She only knew who a few of the people were in this photograph. The rest of them are forgotten to this world, their names having been lost along with the years. All of the time that they had spent here on this earth and no one even remembered their names. How many things had they done? How many lives had they affected? Where had they lived? Where had they died? All of this information is lost forever. It was as if they had never existed. Would she one day be as they are now? Would someone one day look at her photograph and wonder who she once was? Would everything she had done, everything she had lived, be lost forever?

She chuckled lightly. "It doesn't even matter," she said aloud to herself. These memories that she cherished so much, they were hers. And if they died when she took her last breath, that would be fine. All that mattered to her, all that had ever mattered, was that she would never lose hold of these memories while she lived. As she placed the last photograph back on the mantle, she knew that as long as she had them, she would never forget.

Social documentary!

Hell yes. I was actually supposed to be working on my project for Genres of photography module. Idea was - and still is - to be consciously influenced by Tony Ray-Jones's work in late sixties / early seventies. I have no idea what to do. deadline's getting closer and closer and I've done absolutely fuck all.

Anyway.

Me and Ben went tripping in Sunderland town centre and around it and we found many things including a church. Not just any church, I think it was the first church of its kind in Sunderland and was built 1719 or something. Pretty old. Yarr.

As we were staring at the exterior decorations of the building this old man behind the fence asked if we wanted to take a look inside.

What we found inside was pretty interesting as well. Not just all the old stuff lounging around, but there was around 20-30 grannies and old men singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins. I reckon you could actually make a script for a psycho horror film out of this...

This old lady started dancing as I was looking for the composition, too bad she stopped before I woke up to release the shutter. Maybe I should have asked her to do it again.

I could nearly smell that book.

Having just been through Valentine's Day some time ago and Women's Day yesterday, I think we ( as in the superior male sex ) really do deserve a national - no, make that global - holiday as well.

Apparently im not the first person to understand this, as someone mentioned theres going to be a Steak'n'Blowjob Day in just 5 days! Perfect!

Here is a citation concerning the holiday. I hope any politician of any level realises how important such a holiday would be and hopefully put up a petition suggesting making this holiday official - we all support "equality" of sexes, don't we?

I wen't out again last night. Lots of weird things happened.

a) I was asked If i wanted to buy acid. I didn't think twice.

b) Chris gave me a condom which I then succesfully put on my head fixing the edge right below my nose, then blowing it full of air making an absolutely MASSIVE balloon out of it. I think I managed to stole the attention of all the people in the club at the time! SUCCESS!
Even though some sorry-ass fucker blew up the balloon by slashing it with his keys but It still was fun.

The Concept

First studio photography project.

I was pretty keen on trying to use news papers as the background and light it somehow - but what the heck, I couldnt be arsed to.

Ok so this fine tuesday this week me and Matt had the studio booked for us for 3 hours from twelve to three, but having been out the night before I only managed to show up around half twelve just to find out that at that point Matt was still well asleep. There I was with all this studio gear half-way set up suffering from a terrible hangover. I think it was nearly 1 or something when Matt gives me a text saying he couldnt get up but he'll try and get to uni as soon as possible.
Anyway, finally when hes around I decide to turn the whole lighting plan upside down placing the flashes in random positions and not really even bothering to think about the ratios or anything - thats what you have digital cameras to preview with for - and simply gave him a 35mm black and white neg to play around with. NO CONCEPT.

Speaking of concepts. Why the hell do we have to think about something as irrelevant as a concept is when youre doing your very first project and just trying to manage to work out how everything works. Even loading a 120mm film to the film back of the Hasselblad 501CM
took me ~5 minutes. There was a problem I never knew the cause of: the camera wouldnt always let me wind the film after exposing the previous one without putting the darkslide back in, taking the back off, wind the mechanism a couple of times and put the back to its place again. I asked the technician but he never said anything really.

Back to the photos. Im pretty pleased with them, somehow the lights worked really well and the negs came out nicely too - no fingerprints from the loading room or anything! I made some resin paper prints and ended up making 6 matt fibe paper prints for the critique tomorrow morning. Two of the print couldve been better though, I had some issues with dust on the negs I couldnt get rid of, I got frustrated after washing the other one of the frames 3 times and it still wouldnt be clean enough so I just made up my mind to try and spend the coming weekend spotting the two prints before submitting them next week. Thumbs up!

Hello All.

I was expecting for more people to show up, those of you who didn't come I am waiting for a hell of a good explonation. :)

Anyway, I think this party was another success in terms of liters of consumed alcohol, good music and lost memories.

Big hand to Ben for keeping the music on and rocking all the time - even though he blew up his amplifier ( you should have turned it off by the time it started smelling bad ). You probably didn't play I like big butts after all but it's allright, I reckon wouldn't be able to remember anyway.

Just like before, there was me putting my 350D in peoples faces firing the flash gun, but I believe I ended up with some proper good quality photos. I think I've been damn lucky again not ending up breaking and/or losing the whole piece... who cares, it's just money and I have a travel insurance anyway, ha! :) (this is not an invite to come n nick my stuff)

This time no one broke anything apart from all the balloons I bought ( Hanne, you owe me 85p exactly! :D).

All these photos are from about - i think - a couple of years back. I used some of them in my portfolio back then and when I applied for university, except back then they were all black and white. This time ive let all the colors bloom! Im quite happy with the results.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my photos, cause I did!

I dont have much to say at this time but I hope Ill find the motivation to go and get those film rolls on my
desk developed and scanned, so you can expect more material soon.

I suddenly recalled my previous blog I kept in finnish... theres some stuff Id like to publish on this one as well.

First one is my teen angst self portrait.. I believe everyone should have one of that kind. All it lacks is razorblaze in the front and some blood on the floor.

Honestly, I was trying out the Sigma DG-500 Super I had bought earlier. I dunno why I thought the bath room would be a good enviroment... w/e.

I love sleeping in the shower. Even though, should you do it too long you all your skin starts itching ^^

Theyre part of a series of Tapio with his frisbee in Tapiola Espoo last summer.

I shot with the flash gun and used a long exposure time to keep the movement.

This series created the concept of snk^ art. doh. ^^

This on is one of my all-time favs. I just love the expression of the girl staring right at the lense.

They were playing hide-n-seek right in the middle of Helsinki.

This one I shot at work.

Ive been driving a 15-ton Man delivery truck as a summer job previously.

Its a cool job - but only when its summer: its warm, theres girls everywhere dressed in tops and skirts, you can usually have long lunch break lieing on top of the truck sunbathing...

... loved it.

During winter - its a pain. Imagine the cold - often minus 20C - and you have to get up at 6am to go to work for 12 hours.

Ill have to spent my whole xmas vacation working again, I wouldnt do it unless I didnt have to.

Following three photos are from Tapiola as well, actually I think they were shot the same day as the frisbee pictures.

This was the day I found out how useful a flash gun can be even when the sun is shining and the sky is clear - a bit of fill-in light from the flash reveals all the details in the shadows, and the colors come out better, too.

Heh, dunno why I picked this one. maybe 'cause the Cirka skateboarding shoes I bought last summer must have been one of the best pair of shoes I have _ever_ bought.

If you have ever in your life been scanning film negatives you will know how frustratingly slow it is. I was told the Nikon 8000 I used would be a quite a fast scanner... BOLLOCKS.

Maybe Ill try the Imacon next time.

Anyway, the photos I scanned are for the second project of the Realism photography module. Theyre all shot at a minor construction site here nearby.

Im not very pleased with the outcome.

Pictures speak better than words, so the following image should describe the quality of all the 5 rolls of film Ive shot so far.

The quality is somewhat... weak?

Shite. whatever. At least I had an idea and Im pretty sure mines very different from all the other students stuff. Which is good. Im very open to new ideas and not afraid of trying different techniques.

I used a flash. I dont know how to use flash properly. At least thats one thing I need to learn amongst all the rest...

To me it doesnt look like it, but at least two different people told me I looked like a gypsie... un-fucking-believable.
Anyway, I love my flashgun. All I need to do is learn how to use it properly :D But with a proper flashgun youre able to produce images you couldnt do with the predominant light ( highlights & shadows ).

Whatever. Im just back from a nightclub downtown Sunderland called The Point. Was loadsa people in there, and by the looks of it its not really hard to get into trouble in a club in the UK: some guy decided to start picking a fight with me and Lauri, we were not so much into it so we basicly tried to flee the scene, but this guy followed us trying to blow punches at our direction all the time. At the end of it, he grabbed Lauris neck at the bar desk and ended up being dragged out of the bar by 3 bouncers. :) Lauri, instead, got a free pint of beer. :)

Furthermore, all these greek girls. There was plenty of them again. Theyre well pretty. Nice bodies. Beautiful faces.

The problem is: theres always 2 greek guys for each of the girls. How do you go and talk to any of them when theyre surrounded by their 'bodyguards'?

But I did see this one with glasses and dark hair. She was propa nice. Too bad me being finnish I didnt have the guts to go and talk to her cause I didnt feel drunk enough, even though I noticed her looking at me constantly. Such a pussy I am. :(

Cant wait to get back to Finland. To be honest I value the finnish nightlife way higher. If nothing else, at least they know how to get pissed and give a fuck about anything else.

The following pictures are from anti-israeli demonstrations in Helsinki in 2006. An israeli patrol had been attacked with some of the soldiers being killed and one of them captured by palestinians. Israel launched a massive military operation agaisnt Hizbollah in Lebanon, which caused a lot of people taking it to the streets marching all over the cities in europe.

Most people in the demostration in Helsinki were not of finnish origin but very clearly from Islamic countries ( we all know the rivalry between the jewish and the muslims in the middle east ) and the demos started looking more of an ethnic event than political. In some of the pictures you can even see them carrying the flags of Hizbollah and Hamas and signs saying "the victory will be ours".

She was well pretty, I liked her eyes.

This one doesnt actually have anything to do with the demo itself, but its a nice picture with a pair quite pretty girls sunbathing in the middle of Helsinki. Its not always cold in Finland, actually the summer is often extremely warm.

She was nice, too.

Alright. During the last demo a group of pro-israeli demostrators showed up waving israeli and finnish flags chanting and shouting out slogans such as "muslims out of the country" and "israeli is the people chosen by god".
These two young girls had brought a pack of eggs with them, they started throwing them at the pro-israeli people standing on top of a coach. Not only eggs were thrown, people had brought different kinds of items to thrown, I even saw stones flying at them.
Make me wonder, what kind of anti-war demonstrators bring all this stuff with them? Doesnt give a good image of their cause, to me.
Secondly, most aggressive people seemed to be youngsters, usually female, too.

This blonde guy with the news paper was really aggressive. He even tried to assault one of the photographers.

At this point the demostrators hadnt yet noticed the pro-israeli people on top of the coach. All the photographers did, though.

I am messy. I just tidied up my room last night and already looks like a proper rubbish dump with beer and soda cans spread all over the carpet, used and clean clothes all mixed up pouring from the closet and by the looks of it I tend to sleep with empty film canisters... theres plenty of them in my bed. And, heh, who wouldnt like food.. :P

Im not really happy with how my studies are doing right at the moment. I havent even started really working on my second photography project and its due in less than a couple of weeks. argh. I do know where Im going to shoot it and the subject is clear as well, to be honest im supposed to go down to the construction site right in the morning at 8, but I need to have a pair of protective work boots due to insurance terms etc. They promised me a hard hat and high-visibility vest but boots were something they didnt have any extra. :( Ill probably go find the shoe warehouse as soon as I get up in the morning and head straight to the site after. Im not sure but they might have a problem with me taking pictures of the people working on this site, but Im quite confident I can work it out.. either just not include any people in the photos (the project describtion doesnt really say youd need to) or just simply make photos of people whose faces are in the shadows or hidden in some other way... that might actually turn out pretty good, and more imp
ortantly, different. Thats what they say, dont stick with the first idea you get, instead, play around with the ideas, leave them alone for some time and have another look later on, I can assure you the results will be lots better.

Amsterdam was cool.

The King of Scandinavia was not that cool. Not that we didnt have a lot of fun etc but you cant even compare the cruise to the ones they have between Helsinki and Stockholm.
Most people were in their sixties, to be honest I think I only saw like 10 ish people of the same age as we were, and half of them were football supporters from Carlisle. Sad.

Anyway, we bought 4 crates of beer ( 4 x 24 cans ), one for each.

Yes we bought some Smirnoff Red Label from the Sea Shop as well, 1 liter for 11.99e. I still have some of that left. This is Thibault staring at the bottle.

As im more into girls asses than tits I tried to make a collection photos of Dutch girls butts.. I only got 3 pictures of which two have lotsa camera shake :(

This is Aiju and a friend of Lauris sitting in the coffeeshop we spent most of the day in. It was a three-story building with very narrow and steep stairs Im sure some people would find really hard to climb after "Coffee". I liked the place, all the hand-painted walls furniture. Cant say the scent was too bad either ;)

Lauri + Heineken. Not the best beer in the world in my opinion, I kinda missed the good old Karhu.

This is for you lot who wanted to know what Amsterdam looks like, Im into tourism photography that much so this is basicly the only shot of that kind. Youd also need way more time to get to know the area, we only had some 5 hour of which 3-4 was spent is coffeeshops and bars.

I promised myself to go and get a pair of trainers and a gym membership, neither was very a successful one:

I just couldnt be arsed to go and get the membership.

I DID go and try to get a pair of trainers, actually found a real cheap pair for £8.99 and the right size as well, but the employees et JJD fucked up the whole thing by having the WRONG pair of shoes in the wrong rack... apparently a more expensive pair too so they asked me for 16 quid something instead of just 8 pound 99. I got pretty pissed off and instantly walked out of the shop with Matt.

Anyway, knowing that I really need to do something to improve my physical condition I kicked off with emptying all my left-over beer cans by pouring them out of the window! For a second there I was quite proud of myself, but not long after I already started regretting what Id done and the disappointment hit my like only an overweight cow processed for meat production is able to.

Didnt have internet access in the morning again and not having anything to do meanwhile my washings were drying I played around with a photo I shot when I was getting rid of the beer...
I need to improve my skills with curves and selective sharpening. Also channels is not something im very familiar with, and so are paths. I think ill go see if they have any books covering these subjects in the library.. probably not but its always worth having a look. At least the photography section in the Ashburne House library seems to be pretty good.

What else.

I need to have someone to clean the sensor of my 350d, theres plenty of dust and other shite all over it. I could do it myself, possibly, but why bother when theyd do it somewhere else for not so much of £.

Anyway, in about 5h 30min Ill be on the boat on my way to Amsterdam, Im really expecting it to be a great journey. Im taking two of my cameras with me as well so I can promise you (myself) a whole lot of pictures both on film and in digital.

Went out with Jonathan for some photos, he needed to look for and take snap shots of different places for a movie project.

anyway, I smoked half a roll of film and took some digi snapshots, too.. heres what i got. whaa.
we had a set of burger & beer in a pub in town, it was great.

its saturday again, theres not much to do except for drinking. i wouldnt like to do it since im going to the Dam on monday, but i dunno.. anything could happen.

Uni project for the digita darkoom module.

Feedback from my work is just one word: brilliant. I wouldnt say its that brilliant, for a band that doesnt exist, songs of which names i simply made up looking at different items spread all over my desk... Carlings lager, fazer schocolate and the bottle of milk of 1.76 pints... the whole thing took me round 2 hours doing, including shooting the images in our bathroom using a flash gun and a white pillow case as a diffuser. brilliant

anyway, i dont quite get the point of photography students being taught things such as using text tool in photoshop when we should in my opinion be exploring the ever unlimited world of digital phography. surely it would be way more profitable to know how to make raw convertions, color corrections, playing with depth of field, sharpening techniques etc etc the list could go forever xx

i want to travel somewhere. Amsterdam, Norway, Northern Ireland.. basicly: anywhere. not that i could really afford it but you can always find a way to get money when you really have the need to... and anyways, whats money worth when youre dead, eventually?

hmm.

tomorrow ima go and try to find a construction site where theyll let me shoot my project II for the realist photography module.
I do have some kind of a vision of what i want to do and what i want my pictures to look like: gritty, grainy and really contrasty. im planning to use either a fast film, say, 800 or even 1600, or just simply push process some 400's.
i really loved Bruce Gilden's work, i want to bring some of the ideas he used into my own work: semi-long exposures combined with flash... 1/30th? 1/15th?
been looking for a cable for my flash gun so i can control the flash in my left hand and the camera body in the right instead of having the flash unit attached to the body... would give me some wicked lighting conditions too.

i dont have the experience to even imagine what my photos would look like and what my chances are to succeed, but i think its worth trying, at least its something else than taking pictures of your so beloved pet animal. i hate pictures of pets.

i need to start doing sports, honestly. i can see and feel myself fattening up, losing the last bits of my health that once used to be pretty good. im really bad at making promises especially to myself, but tomorrow ill go and get me a pair of running shoes and get a membership at the uni gym.

and finally send the evidence of university enrollment and tenency agreement to KELA.
